Affordable and smart charging infrastructure for bidirectional charging

NEVERFLAT is paving the way for a sustainable, flexible, and intelligent charging infrastructure. Close cooperation between leading European partners is resulting in innovative solutions that not only make future charging solutions more affordable and efficient, but also optimally combine electric mobility and energy systems through the use of bidirectional charging.

We are excited to be part of the NEVERFLAT project and to contribute our expertise in charge point management systems to the important development of bidirectional charging. Together with our partners, we are developing innovative V2G solutions that will take the integration of e-mobility and energy systems to the next level and prove that electric vehicles are not part of the problem, but part of the solution when it comes to meeting the current challenges in a changing and volatile energy system.

Aim of the project

With the increasing demand for electric vehicles, there is also a growing need for an efficient, accessible, and affordable charging infrastructure. At the same time, the increasing energy demand from e-mobility, combined with the expansion of renewable energies, poses new challenges for the energy system.

The project therefore aims to develop a cost-effective and intelligent charging infrastructure that optimally combines electric mobility and energy systems through the use of bidirectional charging. Electric vehicles can not only be supplied with electricity, but can also temporarily store excess energy in their batteries during periods of high electricity production and feed it back into the grid at times of high demand. In this way, they actively contribute to grid stability and the promotion of the energy transition.

By using state-of-the-art technologies such as machine learning, WBG semiconductors, and advanced simulation models, NEVERFLAT optimizes energy use, increases grid stability, and improves the use of renewable energies.
To achieve this, innovative charging stations and advanced software solutions are being developed and tested at four pilot sites in Germany, Spain, and Romania. These sites serve to validate the technology and demonstrate its potential for future widespread deployment across Europe.

The role of Grid & Co.

Grid & Co. is contributing its expertise to the project by providing a plug & charge and e-roaming-capable charge point management system. Based on the latest standards such as OCPP 2.1 and ISO 15118-20, this system enables innovative vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications and ensures efficient and user-friendly control of bidirectional charging processes.

As the central interface between the vehicle, charging station and power grid, Grid & Co. is also responsible for integrating the technologies developed as part of NEVERFLAT into a fully functional, ready-to-use system. In addition, Grid & Co. is actively involved in the demonstration of V2G charging processes at the pilot site in Berlin, Germany.
